Salford Red Devils Head Coach Paul Rowley reflected on his sides recent 6-46 defeat to Wigan Warriors.

The Red Devils were no match for the Warriors who extended their run of wins to eight in a row – while Salford extended their winless run to nine games.

Paul Rowley’s Red Devils came into the game looking to turn the tide in their season but were quickly out muscled by the travelling side.

The away team were able to get themselves ahead in the seventh minute, which came from Salford attack.

Esan Marsters tried to chip the ball forward but only succeeded in finding the hands of Field, who easily cut through the home line to take it back to the other end.

The second followed in the 15th minute as Wigan quickly shifted the ball right for Douglas to score his first of the season in the corner.

And despite the Red Devils being setback early on, they continued to show their character and determination.

However, despite the teams spirit the team were no match for the Warriors who were able to score four tries in the first half.

With the Red Devils 22-0 down, they continued to push to score points, but Jack Ormondroyd dropped the ball just short of the line.

The visitors’ response was emphatic as they charged to the other end and Eckersley exchanged passes with Liam Marshall before touching down.

Keighran then found a gap to touch down in the corner, kicking his own conversion for a 34-0, while Salford’s frustration continued when 18-year-old debutant Sam Hill thought he had a try at the other end, but Brierley’s pass was forward.

Junior Nsemba then shifted the ball wide for Douglas to dive over for his third of the fixture.

And with the Red Devils defeated, there was late joy when Nathan Connell charged through the middle for a 76th-minute try that was celebrated as much more than a consolation.

However, despite the late try it was Wigan who had the last say in the contest as Farrimond would score the final points to separate the team by 40 points once again.

Following the defeat, Rowley said: “As always they never give in, and there are some positive things.

“We worked hard to get into a battle, and we worked hard to get in that battle. So, to let Wigan score them sort of tries was disappointing from our part.”

He added: “It was a typical Wigan performance as they are a world class team with world class players and respect goes to them for getting a professional job done.”

And despite the gap in the defeat, Paul Rowley continued by praising the supporters who have continued to back the team during this turbulent time.

“I said it before the game watching the boys warm-up, there’s a small bunch of loud and loyal Salford fans at that end there that were really encouraging our boys.

“To me, that’s the motivation. If I’ve got that Salford shirt on and I’m playing, I’m doing everything for them fans, that’s motivating me,” he continued.

“The effect they have, no matter how many there are in numbers is unbelievable because obviously the players felt the same way I did.

“Again, I’m not too proud to recognise that, it hurts to lose, but I’ve got to take my hat off to the lads, who continue to put a shift in.”

The Red Devils remain bottom of the league, level on points with the Huddersfield Giants – Paul Rowley’s side will now turn their attention to St.Helens.

The fixture against the Saints will be hosted on Sunday 15 June at the Salford Community Stadium – with the side hoping to change their form once again.
