Salford residents are set to be entertained by a funny, poignant and celebratory new play ‘By Royal Appointment’.
Written by Daisy Goodwin, known for her ITV historical drama series Victoria, her debut play will look into the kind of power that only a Queen can wield.
Audiences will be welcomed to the Lowry from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 August, as the play directed by former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Dominic Dromgoole concludes its premiere UK tour in Salford.
With Queen Elizabeth II being famous for her discretion, and never upsetting the public with her words, the play will look at her one way of expression – her wardrobe.
The play will follow her world as she charms everyone through coats and admonishes her family through a carefully chosen hat.
Audiences will see how the Queen is uninterested in fashion herself but will see how her look is managed by her Designer, her Milliner and most powerful of all, her Dresser.
Throughout the play, guests of the Lowry will see how a working-class girl who goes from advising the Queen on the colour of her lipsticks to the real power behind the throne.
But the Dresser, like all royal favourites is living on borrowed time.
Guests of the Lowry will be able to see the behind the scenes of one of the most popular and recognisable monarchs.
By Royal Appointment will also see national treasure Anne Reid star as the Queen – known for her roles as Valerie Barlow in the soap opera Coronation Street.
As well as her roles as Jean in the sitcom dinnerladies; and her role as Celia Dawson in Last Tango in Halifax.
And Anne Reid will be met on stage alongside Caroline Quentin as The Dresser, and with Olivier award-winning James Dreyfus as The Milliner and Merchant Ivory and Poldark legend James Wilby as The Designer.
By Royal Appointment comes to the Lowry from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 August – more information about the play can be found here.
