Swinton Lions are set to host a series of summer camps this August, aiming to reunite the community with the local rugby.
The camps will be scheduled every week throughout August and hosted at St Peter CofE Primary School.
The summer sessions will be used to not only help the younger generation build up their rugby skills, but also be used to make friends, as well as encouraging sport in a safe and supported environment.
The summer experience will be open for children in school years of 3, 4, 5, and year 6 and be able to get the full Swinton Lions RLFC experience.
And this was encouraged by Swinton Lions Foundation Head of Deliver, Mark Robinson who said: “This will be bringing Swinton rugby back to Swinton, as you know we play out of Sale at Heywood Road.
“A project like this is about bringing different types of rugby back to Swinton.”
And the club hoping to reintroduce themselves back into the Swinton community, and summer camps such as this will be the start of that.
“This is the start of the reintroduction, as we want to bring rugby back to the community of Swinton.”
Mark continued: “The idea of this started 18 months ago when I came into the role, as without the Swinton community this team won’t build on and grow any further.
“Something like this will be massive as we have to start building the next generation of Swinton, we want to make our own players here and the camps are the start of this.”
And with these starting blocks for the future, the community sessions will take place throughout the week between 10am and 2pm – offering a “fantastic summer rugby experience.”
Mark continued: “The sessions will be low intensity fun, and we are aiming to bring new children to rugby.
“People see the sport as bashing into one another, and it is a lot more than that. It takes a lot of skills, and we want to help people build those skills and encourage more to take part.”
As Mark added: “We don’t have an expectation of participants, if we get five people turn or thirty people show up for it, we will be happy as it will bringing rugby back to Swinton.
“We just want people to join in and fall in love with the game and continue to build on our successes in other departments.”
And for those interested in the summer camps, can register and book a place here.
