Applications for half price unlimited bus travel for 18 to 21-year-olds has now opened, cutting the cost of public transport across the network.
Across Salford and Greater Manchester there are around 150,000 young people set to benefit from the new bus pass.
The bus passes will help to connect people between the ages of 18-21 travel to work, training, or education opportunities.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced this week (Monday 1 September) that applications are now open.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester also announced a raft of improvements across the city-region including more frequent buses, cheaper travel and new round-the-clock services.
The Greater Manchester economy is experiencing faster growth compared to the UK as a whole – and making travel easier, more affordable and inclusive for all as part of the Bee Network is critical to our continued success.
With the opening of the new application, young people can now buy a 28-day bus travelcard for £40 – half the price of adult fares and the equivalent of just £1.43 per day for unlimited travel on any Bee Network bus in Greater Manchester.
These travel cards will also include a growing network of night buses – helping young people to earn, learn and socialise.
The move is aimed at helping the thousands of young people once their 16-18 ‘Our Pass’ expires, supporting them as they move into further education or the world of work.
And Salford residents who wish to access this pass can access it through digital applications that are open via the Bee Network app.
Fatima Bangoura, Youth Engagement Officer at Youth Leads said: “Having the Our Pass when I was 16-18 meant that I could get to college without worrying about travel costs. It gave me the freedom to work, study, spend time with friends, and explore Manchester without the burden of thinking about how much every journey would cost.
“The new 18-21 pass opens doors for those who may worry about losing that support once their Our Pass ends, making travel for training, apprenticeships, education and employment far more accessible.”
Fran Wilkinson, Director for Customer and Growth at TfGM said: “Young people in Greater Manchester have been calling out for an affordable transport option for when their Our Pass expires and this new pass will give them that.
“We know this is such an important time in a young person’s life as they look to go into further education or enter the world of work.
Fran continued: “Now as they explore the many opportunities available to them, they will be able to use any Bee Network bus as much as they need to at half the price.”
Residents are required to prove their eligibility by providing proof of age and address in Greater Manchester and pay a one-off £10 administration fee.
