Salford City suffered a second defeat in a row as they were beaten 2-0 by promotion rivals Grimsby Town on a disappointing afternoon on home soil.
Karl Robinson’s side were leapfrogged by the Mariners at the top end of the League Two table, as they dropped to fifth place in the hunt for League one football.
The day began in the worst possible manner for those of a red persuasion, as Evan Khouri swept home Charles Vernam’s pull back from close range inside 40 seconds, leaving a steep mountain to climb for the remainder of the match.
A swift response was quickly denied as Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym was drawn into a sharp save by a powerful Daniel Udoh effort.
Salford’s woes wouldn’t cease there, as starman Vernam scored and assisted against Manchester United earlier in the season, and repeated his heroics with an edge of the box strike cutting through a sea of legs and leaving goalkeeper Matty Young rooted.
It wasn’t all Black and White domination however, as a whole host of chances presented themselves for the hosts.
Dangerman Dan Udoh’s monstrous hold up play cleared Jorge Grant to open fire, but his ballooned attempt squandered a golden opportunity to get a Salford name on the scoresheet.
An incredibly open first half saw chances at either end, as the match momentum seemingly took a shift by the minute.
But the match didn’t live up to the billing after the restart, apart from two diving saves from Salford goalkeeper Matty Young to deny Vernam and George McEachran respectively, the Ammies comfortably neutralised any further Grimsby threat.
It was Adebola Owulo who came closest to reducing the defecit, as his dropping header bounced agonisingly wide of the post following Rosaire Longelo’s tame effort, which was comfortably matched by Christy Pym between the sticks.
There was a bright spot though for the Ammies, as Kelly N’Mai’s first appearance since early August carved out some moments promise through a condensed second half of football, despite Grimsby deservedly travelling home as victors.
