20 weapons were handed over in a two-hour police force knife amnesty in Irlam.
Greater Manchester police officers held the event at Tesco Extra on Woodrow Way.
During two hours between 12pm and 2pm, 20 bladed articles were surrendered by members of the public to police officers.
Members of the public who chose to drop knives off were asked to place them in a secure container or wrap them up in cardboard with tape to prevent unintended harm from being caused.
Those who surrendered the knives were not required to give any personal details and were not prosecuted for carrying them.
Police say the shopping centre location raised awareness of the amnesty. One resident became aware of the public safety event while doing their shopping, went home and then came back to hand in three knives.
Whilst standing with the bin, the officers also spoke to customers and dealt with enquiries that people asked about whilst shopping.
Greater Manchester police have 13 permanent amnesty bins spread across Greater Manchester.
Possession of weapons offences were 12.5% higher in Salford than the national average between April 2024 and March 2025.
During an hour-long knife amnesty held in Walkden last month, 85 bladed articles were surrendered to officers, including kitchen knives, Stanley knives and meat cleavers.
Sergeant Helen Matthews from our Salford district previously stated the importance of getting “dangerous weapons off the streets.
“We know that knife crime causes real fear and harm, and we are committed to tackling it head-on. Events like this show that people want to do the right thing, and we’re here to make that as easy and safe as possible. No questions asked, no prosecutions – just a chance to make a difference,” she said.
“We’ve got 13 permanent amnesty bins across Greater Manchester, and we encourage anyone who wants to dispose of a knife safely to use them. Every knife surrendered is one less risk to our communities, and we’ll keep pushing forward with our relentless efforts to make our streets safer.”
