Salford City will host 5th-place MK Dons this Saturday in a League Two heavyweight bout at the Peninsula Stadium.

Karl Robinson’s men spring off the back of a resounding 4-2 win over Wolves U21s in the Vertu trophy on Tuesday night and will no doubt be raring to continue their winning ways.

Goals by youngster Bruno Padovani and veteran striker Cole Stockton saw the Ammies overturn an early one-goal deficit, before Ruben Butt, son of Salford CEO and former England international Nicky Butt, stole the show with two late strikes to secure their place in the knockout stages.

But Salford’s next challenge comes in League Two as they visit MK Dons.

Both sides will have equal measure for optimism heading into the clash, with Salford, unbeaten in 5 outings, duelling against the joint most free-scoring outfit in the division.

Additionally, the Ammies enter the weekend three points adrift of Walsall at the top of the tree, a point above their opponents, having won one more game across the 15 played so far.

But Saturday’s match is all to play for in a battle for 4th place in the standings, with the visitors presented with the chance to leapfrog the Ammies with a win at the Peninsula.

Numbers aside, however, the Dons will have their disheartening 4-0 defeat at home to Swindon Town on Tuesday in the Vertu Trophy freshly in mind, and Paul Warne’s side will be looking to the return of their marquee men Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who have been in fine form of late, to revive their fortunes.

The League Two table is becoming tighter by the week, and it seems as though that crunch-time will be in early action this campaign as matches pile up in their masses over the Christmas period.
