Salford City are looking to return to winning ways as they host an in-form Shrewsbury Town side at the Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday night.
Despite Salford being in the top half and Shrewsbury near the bottom, the two sides have completely contrasting form, with the Shrews winning four out of their last four under new manager Gavin Cowan, whilst the Ammies have lost their last four in all competitions, including a spirited defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup.
The two sides have met four times before, three times in the FA Cup and once in League Two, with Salford most recently beating the Shropshire side 3-1 at the Croud Meadow earlier in the season.
Following a remarkable run of form spanning December and January, Salford are yet to win in the month of February, losing all of their games and slipping down the table into 8th, outside of the playoff places by a point, with two games in hand on some of the teams above them.
Summer signing Daniel Udoh spent five years at Shrewsbury, scoring 31 goals in 155 appearances and was on the scoresheet the last time the two sides met, bagging a brace. Despite his electric start to the season, Udoh’s form in front of goal has stalled, with his last goal coming on New Year’s Day against Barrow.
Part of Gavin Cowan’s renaissance at Shrewsbury has been due to loan signing Iwan Morgan. The 20-year-old Welshman, on loan from Brentford, has two goals in his last three appearances for the club and will look to cause trouble for Salford, who have the worst goal difference in the top half of League Two.
Ammies boss Karl Robinson was unhappy with the officials in the club’s 3-2 defeat to Cheltenham Town, he said:
“For 11 v 11 we were very good. We showed an impetus and control, up until the sending off and the penalty. It’s a double whammy when that happens and when two people come together fairly like that, it wasn’t like Garbs was seeking to gain an advantage. Both of them had hold of each other.
“To see 10 minutes added time go up, I find baffling, but we have to accept it. Of the bits we had control of, I am most disappointed with their second goal. That’s something we have to accept. The other aspects of it, we’ll keep our thoughts internal on that.”
The game will kick off at 7:45pm on Tuesday evening.
