Residents living in Salford Quays are set to benefit from more greenery on a popular walking route.

Large planting beds designed to boost biodiversity and enhance the area’s appearance will be installed as part of the first phase of improvements to the Mariner’s Canal area in 2026.

Salford Council’s Procurement Board decided to award the contract for the development, which is scheduled to take place from February to April next year.

The initial transformation will focus on the south-western paddle near the Water Sports Centre and the western side of the canal south of Grain Wharf Bridge.

The access lower pathway along the canal will be closed off during this period, but the upper pathway will remain open and diversions will be clearly signposted on site.

Councillor Jack Youd, Deputy City Mayor and Lead Member for Finance, Support Services and Regeneration at Salford City Council, said: “It is great news that we have got the green light for this investment in Salford Quays.

“The first phase of the works will take place in early 2026 and will enhance the walking routes and outdoor spaces we have.

“Existing trees will be removed as part of the scheme, with an equal number of more suitable species replanted, improving visibility and protecting the long-term health and beauty of the avenue.

“We would love local people to get involved and work with our rangers and community planting scheme to plant the new greenery.

“No experience is necessary to take part in this community project and you will also get to meet new people.”
