Kick it out

Footballers are coming together in Salford for a tournament to challenge discrimination in sport as part of Hate Crime Awareness Week.

The six-aside football event in partnership with the Kick It Out movement takes place on Wednesday, February 4.

University students, staff and the local community will be competing to promote inclusion through sport from midday to 3pm on the 3G pitch at Salford University’s Peel Park Campus for the third year running.

Daley O’Neal, physical activity and wellbeing operation manager at the Salford University Sports Centre, said: “The aim of the event is to help spotlight Kick It Out’s educational modules around hate crime and discrimination as part of the Hate Crime Awareness Week.”

He said the event was about making sure Salford University was leading the way as an anti-racist institution.

Teams from Manchester University, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Greater Manchester, University Academy 92, and the University Campus of Business, will join the tournament to demonstrate the shared values of collaboration and friendly competition.

Other partners include Manchester Council and Salford University’s Respect, Culture and Behaviour Team.

Spectators are invited to watch the matches and also have fun with interactive stalls, pick up merchandise and take part in activities designed to start a conversation and inform around hate and discrimination.

Guest speakers include Paul Giannis, hate crime advisor for Greater Manchester, and Salford’s Ceremonial Mayor, Councillor Heather Fletcher.

The sign up form is now closed but players can join the waiting list by emailing d.k.oneal@salford.ac.uk
