Salford families with three or more children could continue to lose out locally even after the two-child benefit limit is scrapped nationally.

Salford still applies a similar cap when calculating council tax support for households with more than two children.

A new motion set to be debated at Salford City Council is calling for that limit to end in line with the wider benefit changes.

Councillors warn that a large number of low-income families in Salford will continue to face reduced support through council tax, which puts additional financial strain on vulnerable households.

Councillor Andrew Walters and Deputy Mayor Jack Youd are asking for a report from the council’s Chief Financial Officer outlining the financial implications of scrapping the restriction.

This would include the estimated annual cost, the number of households currently affected and options for implementing changes through the next review cycle.

The motion is set to be considered tomorrow, Wednesday March 18, at the full meeting of the council.
