The tunnelling network in Peel Green Road.

The first upgrades to the sewer network across Salford have been completed as part of the £525 million investment aiming to upgrade water quality across the city.

The company United Utilities has been using tunnel boring equipment to install a new larger sewer along Peel Green Road in Eccles to help reduce the risk of flooding.

The tunnelling work was completed in time for the road to be reopened for the Bank Holiday weekend, with future works taking place in Summer.

These works will focus on bringing the new sewer into use by connecting it to the existing network.

Delivery Manager for United Utilities, Jim Scholes, said: “The work on Peel Green Road is an important part of our wider work at Eccles wastewater treatment works.

“The completion of tunnelling activities is a big milestone for the area as we look to reduce the flooding risk to the local community.

“We’d like to thank them for their patience whilst this essential work has been taking place.”

Whilst the works on Peel Green Road have taken place to reduce flooding in the local area, United Utilities is aiming to upgrade the resilience of the sewer network across the entirety of Salford with their £525 million investment.

This will take place over a number of projects over the next four years, including upgrades to its treatment works in Salford and Eccles, additional storage created in the sewer network off Liverpool Road and a rainwater management scheme in Adelphi Village.
