A historic Salford pub is set to welcome a renowned comedy club for a special one-off event as part of its summer celebration of Boddingtons beer.
The Black Friar, the oldest remaining Boddingtons pub in the world, toasted the first summer since ‘Boddies’ cask revival by unveiling a new menu in honour of the famous beer.
The team behind the Grade II-listed pub on Blackfriars Road said they would mark the ‘Summer of Boddies’ in style and are now set to transform their beer garden into an open-air comedy venue.
On Thursday 2 July, the pub will host Manchester comedy institution Frog and Bucket for a special outdoor comedy night.
MC Faizan Shah, Garrett Millbrick, Jacob Nussey and Bethany Black are among the lineup of acclaimed standups set to perform in the pub’s tavern and outdoor space.
Faizan, a local comedian who moved to the UK as a child, has earned praise for his sharp observations on growing up in an immigrant household. His performance saw him reach the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards.
Meanwhile, former British Comedian of the Year semi-finalist Jacob Nussey has supported Salford comedy legend Jason Manford, Russell Kane, and Jack Carroll.
Both comics will hope to get the crowd laughing as they join a night of live comedy in the heart of Salford celebrating the long-awaited return of Boddingtons on cask.
After a 13-year absence, it relaunched in Salford last September and The Black Friar says it’s been a popular choice for drinkers since.
“The Black Friar and Boddingtons go back further than most people realise. This pub was built for Boddingtons’ workers, so when the cask came back, there was only one place it truly belonged,” said Neil Burke, the owner of the pub.
