Salford police are appealing for information following the death of a Swan in Swinton.

The force has launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for the incident at Queensmere Dam in Swinton.

Police have urged the person responsible to come forward and contact them.

They have also requested that anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that can support their probe contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting log 1668-250626.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, swans and their nests are protected. It is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take a wild bird and doing so can result in heavy fines or imprisonment.

Salford police added that they are aware of the discourse on social media about the swan’s death and efforts to try to obtain the registration of a car thought to be involved.

However, they said that attempts by members of the public to use AI tools to get the registration have been unsuccessful.

The force thanked locals who have continued to check on the well-being of the remaining Swan and Cygnets in the area.

A police spokesperson said: “GMP Salford are aware of an incident that occurred recently involving the sad death of a Swan at Queensmere Dam, Queensway, Swinton.

“Local officers are investigating this matter and continue to do so, but ask for the public’s help to identify the suspect involved. We are aware of lots of talk on Social media and people using AI tools to try and obtain a registration of the vehicle involved from a picture taken however, it is clear that these registrations obtained are incorrect and numerous different registrations produced.

“We are asking that anyone with any information, particularly the person who has witnessed the awful incident or has any other information to assist, contact GMP on 101 or via our live chat or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting log 1668-250626.

“We are continuing with other enquiries, including reviewing CCTV in the area however need the help of the local community to identify the person responsible.

“Alternatively if you are reading this post and are responsible for this sad incident, please call us.

“We understand how upsetting this has been for the community, which is why we are asking for your help. We would also like to pass on our thanks to those of you who have continued to check on the remaining Swan and Cygnets and provided reassuring updates on them.”
