A musician from Salford has just made history with a world-first Three Peak challenge while carrying a 50kg drum kit, in support of a mental health charity.
Aaron Youd, most commonly known as the Manchester Drummer, climbed England’s Scafell Pike, Scotland’s Ben Nevis and Wales’ Snowdon while carrying a full drum kit on his back throughout the challenge.
Aaron’s endurance was tested throughout the challenge. But as if that wasn’t enough, he also decided to perform on Ben Nevis and Snowdon.
His musical challenge raised money for Mandem Meetup, a charity that supports men’s mental health and encourages open conversations about emotional wellbeing.
Aaron, who has spent two decades performing across the UK, says the challenge was never just about climbing the mountains.
After losing six fellow musicians and friends to suicide in recent years, motivation sparked to take on this inspiring challenge.
“I’m honestly still trying to take in what I’ve achieved. Carrying a full drum kit up all three peaks was tough, but getting to the top and actually playing the drums at the top of two of the mountains themselves was incredible”, he said.
“This was never just about climbing three mountains. I wanted to do something that would get people talking about men’s mental health and raise money for Mandem Meetup.
If one person sees what I’ve done and feels able to talk to someone, ask for help or check in on a mate, then every step and every beat was worth it.”
He added: “I’m hoping we can now get this officially recognised by Guinness World Records, but for me the biggest achievement is getting the message out there.”
Aaron was supported by Therme Manchester during his climb across the Three Peaks. They provided him with clothing and kit, so he was fully equipped.
The wellness company decided to get involved after their CEO, Professor David Russell, spotted Aaron drumming and stopped to watch him perform.
“To see him take on the Three Peaks carrying his drum kit and finish by playing at the summit of Ben Nevis and Snowdon, it is an impressive achievement”, said Professor David Russell.
“But what makes this really meaningful is the purpose behind it.”
Aaron added: “I wanted to do something that would get people talking about men’s mental health and raise money for Mandem Meetup.”
