Joe Powell’s late wondergoal secured a huge three points for Salford City against Swindon Town, at The AIG Stadium, making it 10 points won from the last available 12 for Peter Cklamovski’s side.
In a first half that saw zero shots on target for either side or a real clear-cut chance, it was the visitors who started the game on the front foot, with on loan Wigan Athletic winger Joseph Hungbo looking a threat down the right, seeing two efforts deflected wide in the opening 15 minutes of the match.
The Ammies grew into the half as it went on , with the best chance coming from an overlapping run from Taylor Allen, his left-footed cross flashed across the face of goal, with strike partners Dan Udoh and Macaulay Langstaff unable to tap in the opening goal.
Kelly N’Mai looked very lively throughout the first 45 minutes, his dancing feet took the ball past two Swindon defenders before he layed the ball to the edge of the penalty area, But Brendan Wiredu’s strike was blocked by defender Stephan Negru
It only took five minutes after the restart for the first shot on target of the game and what a golden chance it was, Ammies captain Ade Oluwo was caught in possession by Hungbo who layed the ball on a plate for the inform Swindon striker Aaron Drinan who looked to do everything right, but was denied by a superb reflex save from Salford Goalkeeper Will Norris.
Salford went close shortly after as Allen saw his shot test the hands of Connor Ripley in the Swindon goal, before Hungbo fired wide for the visitors as the game opened up after the break.
Joe Powell came close for Peter Cklamovski’s side with 20 minutes to play, stinging the palms of Ripley from a free kick, before new signing Dan Scarr couldn’t make a significant contact on the ball from the resulting corner and saw his tame effort held by Ripley.
But then came a moment of sheer, individual brilliance 13 minutes from the end, with a stunning left footed strike from long range flying into the top left hand corner beyond a helpless Ripley to make it three goals in as many games for Powell.
Powell went close again in stoppage time but was denied by Ripley at his near post, as Salford comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to stamp a third home win in a row.
The Ammies now leapfrog Swindon in the table on goal difference, and will look to take this good home form into Tuesday’s EFL Trophy clash against Sheffield Wednesday.
