LIVERPOOL versus Manchester United is always one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season, but there’s added intensity going into this one. It will be Jose Mourinho’s first trip to Anfield as United manager and he will be desperate to avoid defeat having won just one game in the top flight since August. On the other hand, Klopp’s Reds go into the game in superb form, they’re on a run of four straight Premier League wins.
The old rivals face off tonight in there 224th meeting and its set to be another thrilling game between the two most successful clubs in English football.
We take a look at three classics from down the years ahead of tonight’s game:
1994 – Liverpool 3 -3 Manchester United
Going into the game, Liverpool sat in eighth position while United were running away with the league. United have shown their title credentials opening up a 3-0 lead with goals through Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce and Ryan Giggs. They went into the break three to the good but if there was ever a ‘game of two halves’ then this is it. Liverpool produced one of the most memorable comebacks through two trademarks: Nigel Clough goals and a dramatic Neil Ruddock equaliser to send Anfield into complete euphoria.
1999 – Liverpool 2 – 3 Manchester United
Liverpool got off to a dreadful start when defender Jamie Carragher, headed into his own net within the opening three minutes. Alex Ferguson’s men found themselves 2-0 up not long after when Andy Cole bagged from a trademark David Beckham cross. The hosts were given a glimmer of hope when debutante Massimo Taibi, failed to claim a ball which subsequently fell to Sami Hyypia who pulled one back. United restored their two-goal lead through, you guessed it, another Jamie Carragher own goal. A grandstand finish was set up when Patrick Berger netted for 2-3 and Andy Cole received a second yellow but it wasn’t to be for Liverpool and a game Jamie Carragher would rather forget about.
2009 – Manchester United 1 – 4 Liverpool
Going into the game, United were defending champions and once again found themselves at the top of the league. None other than Cristiano Ronaldo had given the hosts the lead from the penalty spot before Fernando Torres capitalised on a Nemanja Vidic error to draw level. It was all one-way traffic from there as Liverpool went to go on scoring another three. Gerrard put Liverpool in front – again through a spot kick. Soon after, United found themselves down to ten men when Vidic took an early bath for a foul and second yellow on Steven Gerrard. Fabio Aurello curled in a fine free kick before Andrea Dossena scored Liverpool’s 4th and completed a fine day for Rafa Benitez’s men with an exquisite lob over the head of Edwin van der Sar. The result gave Liverpool fans a glimmer of hope of title glory but it wasn’t to be, falling 4 points short of eventual winners Manchester United.
