A MAN has died following a three car collision on the East Lancs road in the early hours of this morning.

John Albert Lancaster, 77, was seriously injured when two Nissan Primera’s and a third vehicle collided at the junction of Moorside Road, Worsley at around 6.35am.

He was rushed to hospital by ambulance but sadly died soon after.

A second man also suffered minor chest pains.

It’s not yet confirmed which vehicle Mr Lancaster was travelling in at the time.

We spoke to Dean Critchley from Swinton, who witnessed the accident:

“I was in the outside lane, he seemed to hit the gas, then hit a van and veered over to the right. The car then took the back end off a minibus then smash straight into the back of the car and then that car shunted forward and caused 3 other cars to crash into each other.

“We pulled the elderley man out of the driver seat because he wasn’t breathing and performed CPR for roughly 15-20 minutes until the ambulance arrived. He kept stopping breathing and had a very faint pulse. A defibrillator was used on the scene and he was taken away in the ambulance but later passed away on the way to hospital

“My thoughts go out to his family.”

Police have launched an investigation and are now appealing for witnesses.

PC Seamus Toal, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, told MEN: “The family and friends of John have been left devastated by this tragic loss.”

“My thoughts are with his family and we have specially trained officers supporting them at this difficult time.

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the full facts around what has happened.”

The crash caused congestion on the eastbound side of the road and also affected Worsley Road from the M60 to the junction for the A6.

Earlier today, buses were also being diverted, including the First V1 V2 service.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible as the A580 Westbound was closed until 9.55am.
