MANCHESTER architect Simpson Haugh has unveiled plans for a 34-storey building that would be the tallest tower in Salford Quays.
Developers have said that the structure would be bigger than Salford Quays’ current tallest building, the Blue Tower, and higher than a 94m office block which was granted consent in 2016 but is not yet under construction.
The architects are behind the Beetham Tower, Manchester’s tallest skyscraper, the Great Northern Warehouse and No. 1 Spinningfields.
The development will include 216 apartments as well a roof terrace, state-of-the-art gym and car parking for residents.
Apartments in the block will be a range of one, two and three bedroom spaces.
The plans for the £45 million tower named Vista have been developed by Forshaw Land and Property and Lichfields.
Nathan Matta, planning director at Lichfields, said: “The scale and density of the current buildings in this part of the Salford Quays is changing, with low level buildings being replaced by a series of taller buildings.
“The development is of a high quality design which will result in an outstanding landmark development in this important part of the city.”
Mr Matta added: “The site is located in a highly sustainable urban area and the development would have a positive impact on the waterside and a number of key viewpoints.”
If council bosses give the plan the green light, the tower will become the tallest in the area and will dominate an already densely populated skyline.
Manchester is building more tall buildings that any other city in the country, outside the capital.
Of the 45 tallest skyscrapers under construction in the UK, seven are in Greater Manchester.
A spokesperson from Forshaw Land and Property, said: “All the team at Forshaw are really excited about the forthcoming launch of our flagship development, Vista in the heart of Salford Quays.
“We have been really encouraged by the positive reception of the local council and their design consultancy panel who fully support the scheme and recognise it as a true landmark building, not just for The Quays but also for Salford.”
Local residents are not surprised to see another high rise building coming to the area.
Courtney Butterfield, 21, resident at X1 The Exchange, said: “I live in a high rise building myself.
“And in my opinion I don’t see why the construction of another tower block matters.
“It’s no surprise given that people know what MediaCity is all about.”
