Lionesses FA Cup

Salford City Lionesses were knocked out of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup in the second qualifying round at the hands of Crewe Alexandra Women.

The Lionesses welcomed Crewe Alexandra Women to the Peninsula stadium for the second round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup. Last year the Lionesses reached the second round of the cup and they hoped to improve on this result.

The Lionesses started the match strong with a shot on target straight away by Feriuz Abdullahi. Possession remained in Salford’s attacking half for the first minutes of the game.

Crewe held up a strong defensive shape against Salfords attackers. Crewe saw an attempt saved well by Salford keeper, Beth Powney.

Crewe’s, Amanda Fallon broke the deadlock to make the score 1-0.

Salford fought back with some possession, but after a clash in the air Crewe were awarded a free kick.

The subsequent free kick ended up in the back of the net courtesy of Laura Garner making it 2-0 to Alexandra.

Feruiz Abdullahi was on hand to supply Salford a lifeline as she put the ball past Crewe keeper Hannah Holloway. Holloway saved a shot by Becky Coe but the ball trickled close enough to the goal, for Abullahi to slide in making the score 1-2 Crewe at half-time.

Just after the second half commenced Crewe scored their third goal courtesy of Emilia Edwards.

Salford made two changes with Ellen Thornton and Lily Robinson coming off being replaced by Kaya Pottinger and Nicole Malpus, for the last 30 minutes.

Salford pulled another goal back in 66th minute scored by Laura Tobin making the score 2-3. This kept the game in the balance for the last 24 minutes.

However, the rest of the second half was uneventful as Salford were knocked out of the cup.

Crewe will now continue on to the next round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup and Salford City Lionesses look towards their next game against Curzon Ashton Women’s in the FA Women’s Challenge Cup.
