In response to this crisis, The University of Salford’s Student Union are offering students free hot food every Wednesday. The hot food is offered as either breakfast or lunch.

Food stall employee, Thomas Hayes, said: “Well at the moment the cost of living inflation rates are at about 10%, and this is obviously a big student area but there’s also people who are suffering, be those students or regular workers who can’t afford to buy lunch or breakfast, so this kind of little gesture helps them.”

The cost of living crisis has many Salford students struggling with their utility bills. Salford student, Thomas Jones, explained that he had to swap his usual full English to ‘breakfast out of a tin’.

Mr Jones explained: “It’s been quiet tight with money right now, the other week I ate a breakfast out of a tin and it wasn’t very nice but it was cheap.”

Salford’s student community have so far have given ‘positive feedback’ for the new offer.

Salford student, Caoimhe Scholes, said: “I think it’s a great idea, I mean just to help people out even if it’s just one meal a week that can make a big difference to people.

“Because with buying food- like Tesco’s, for example, they’ve increased their price for a meal deal and a lot of people can’t afford that, I know I can’t, so things like this really help out.”

Salford student, Anna Brian, said: “I am literally living off pennies at the minute, I’m really, really scraping it through.

“But it’s kind of just helped me because I’m not going to the shop and spending God knows how much on a meal deal, because I know Tesco’s have put them up now to like four quid. So yeah it’s helping big time.”

Salford’s Student Union representative, Jedidiah Tetteh, said: “From the SU, we are totally aware of the cost of living crisis so we are doing our best to kind of put measures in place to help.”
