A Team GB Olympic medallist is set to attend the opening of a new Aldi supermarket in Salford.
Lewis Richardson was Britain’s only boxing medallist at the 2024 Paris 2024 Olympic Games, winning bronze in the 71kg category.
The gloves will be off for the 28-year-old Olympic boxer when he swaps the ring for ribbon-cutting duties at the new Aldi store on Trafford Road in Ordsall, which opens its doors to Salford shoppers for the first time on 28 May.
Boxing star Lewis added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.”
Lewis will be on hand to give away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s famous Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue.
The shop, which is recruiting 24 local workers, is calling on local charities and food banks to register with its Neighbourly scheme – a community engagement platform that connects businesses to community groups.
Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner with the new Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.

Manager Rick Harris said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Salford Quays. It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Lewis join us will make it a morning to remember.”
The new store will be located at Unit 1, 11, Trafford Road, Ordsall, M5 3PH, and will be open 8am – 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday.
