Footballing superstars Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt have unveiled a new state-of-the-art community football pitch in Little Hulton.
The Class of ’92 gathered at ‘Cruyff’ pitch yesterday morning to ceremoniously open the pitch to the public. The pair, along with some members of Salford charity, Foundation 92, played the first game on the pitch against Little Hulton’s young people.
The ‘Cruyff’ pitch, named after Dutch player Johan Cruyff, is thought to be the first of its kind in Salford, featuring all-weather terrain, and solar powered floodlights.
Funded by Foundation 92, in partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation, For Housing, Salford City Council and CommUNITY Little Hulton, the pitch will provide access to free outreach sessions and local teams.
After work began on the pitch in January 2023, the free community space will allow Foundation 92 to provide football, exercise and sport sessions in the area.
Head of Foundation 92, Tom Hutton, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Cruyff Foundation, For Housing and Salford City Council on the construction of a Cruyff Court in Little Hulton.
“This facility will allow us to provide better, more engaging sessions and deliver more for the people of Little Hulton. Alongside the work we already do in the area, this pitch will allow us to really make a meaningful difference to the lives of people across the area.”
The court is the second of its kind in Greater Manchester, after the construction of Cruyff Court Jackie Groenen (former Manchester United WFC star) at Cumberland School in neighbouring Bolton, which opened in 2021.
