Salford Red Devils have confirmed the signing of halfback Joe Mellor on a two-year deal.

The 33-year-old arrives at the AJ Bell Stadium from Leigh Leopards, where he spent three seasons.

Born in Warrington, Mellor started his career at Wigan, before making two successful loan spells at Widnes Vikings, where he moved permanently in 2013.

He scored 66 tries at his time at Lowerhouse Lane, before moving to Toronto Wolfpack for two seasons, before joining the then Leigh Centurions.

The halfback can also operate as a hooker and joins the Red Devils off the back of a Challenge Cup final victory last season.

Speaking to club media, Mellor said: “I am really happy to join Salford for the next two years and I am excited to get started, and meet the rest of the team.”

Ian Blease, Director of Rugby for the Red Devils also added: “Joe is a player we have admired for some time. Similar to Chris Hankinson, our coaches know Joe well and what he can bring to our club.

“I am really pleased Joe has chosen to join Salford and I am looking forward to seeing him in the Red Devils shirt this season.”

Mellor becomes the eighth name to join the Reds this off-season, alongside Nene Macdonald, Cade Cust, Ethan Ryan, Joe Shorrocks, Matty Foster, Kai Morgan and Chris Hankinson.
