Declan John is set to remain at Salford City for the rest of the 2023/24 season after his loan from Bolton Wanderers was extended.

The defender joined the club on the deadline day of the summer transfer window, with the initial agreement with the Trotters terminating on January 1.

And although this hasn’t been the start to his Salford career that he would have expected, with the club currently residing in 21st position.

The former Wales International has been able to register 19 appearances for the club and will look to add to that following the extension.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to offer more to the club with the arrival of Karl Robinson, with the defender having previous experience of promotion from League Two in the 2020-21 campaign.

With a career that has seen moves from being a youth player at Cardiff City to playing for Rangers, Swansea, and Bolton, he spoke about the desire to remain at the club: “It was an easy decision, I think the club needed a bit of stability.

“The first two months for me personally went reasonably well, we had a spell of a few games where we had a few wins and draws, but have had a tricky few weeks for whatever reason.”

Despite not having a league win since the 24th of October, Declan spoke positively about the second half of the season: “I’m sure that’s going to change with the quality we have in the team, and I’ve still got a lot to show and prove that I’m a good player.

“We want to finish strong and give a good account of ourselves, and we owe it to the fans, the club, and ourselves to really get going and get up the table!”

Declan also went on to speak about the positive feeling toward the newly appointed manager Karl Robinson: “Meeting him today the boys seem upbeat which is good to see and be a part of.

“We’re relishing the challenge and are looking forward to working hard and doing our best for the club and the new Gaffer.”
