Following Salford City’s 2-0 loss to Gillingham, Karl Robinson hinted that The Ammies would be active in the summer transfer window to fill “areas lacking in quality.”

Speaking to the press after the game, Robinson highlighted that his players showed no lack of application, “My players have given me everything, but we’ve lacked in certain areas, these are the areas that I want to improve on in the summer.”

Salford City’s defeat against Gillingham marked the side’s third game without a win. Before the Mansfield game, only seven days ago, Salford had been on a 9-game unbeaten run – in the space of a week their form has taken a turn for the worse.

Robinson noted: “It’s been a terrible week (but) playing on a very heavy pitch, playing three games in seven days, playing Mansfield and Gillingham- one of the most resourced teams- it was always going be a tough week for us.

“We have had a terrible seven days; you can get everything right for so long and then have a bad seven-day period and it feels like the whole world on your shoulders.”

“Our final ball needs to be better; we’ve got to be more aggressive in how we attack teams.”

Robinson explained that his side looked complacent, as if the team were waiting for chances to come, and subsequently got punished: “You then get one decision that goes against you and your 1-0 down.”

“It’s starting to become a lot clearer to me that we need to improve. If I’ve got to be the person to be ruthless and move people on at the right stages, I’ll certainly do that.”

“There is a level of discipline, effort, dedication, talent and tactical (ability needed), you can’t play for us without that ability.”

Gillingham were good value for their 2-0 victory over Salford City, with The Ammies failed to mount any sustained pressure in the game and looked vulnerable to The Gills’ threat on the counter.

However, in a week where Salford City has begun a search for internal investment, playoff-chasing Gillingham are a reminder of the impact spending can have on a team’s performance.

2 years ago the Kent-based side were taken over by the American property magnate Brad Gallinson. At the time Gillingham were flirting with relegation from the Football League, through bringing in quality players the side is now in contention for promotion through the playoffs.

Robinson commented on the level of wealth in the League: “I think that when you look around, the way the games going wed be silly not to look for external support to make us better.”

He highlighted that the remaining games will almost be a trial to see who plays for the club next season.

The fixtures get no easier for Salford City. The Ammies travel to Stadium MK where they will face 5th-place MK Dons in their next league fixture. Kick-off is at 3pm.
