Plans to build 274 new homes in Ordsall were approved by the council yesterday (March 7).
The 137 new houses and 137 apartments are to be built on the land between Robert Hall Street and West Park Street.
The development plans include a range of homes incorporating two-to-four-bedroomed townhouses and one- and-two-bedroomed apartments.
The main goal of the Ordsall scheme is to address the urgent need for housing while also enhancing “community connections, using a blend of townhouses and apartments.”
The development will be ‘tenure blind’ mixing homes for sale with council homes for rent. The council says more than 40 per cent of the houses will be affordable.
Councillor John Warmisham said: “This has been a long time coming, – I think it’s fantastic that we are building council houses again, it’s so much needed.
“If you look at that area it has been gentrified, and I know there are families there who can’t afford to live there, so to see something like this has got to be welcome and I fully support it.”
The construction of the homes will be managed by Dérive, a development company owned by Salford City Council.
Cllr Tracy Kelly, lead member for housing, property and regeneration, previously stated: “Affordable homes are desperately needed in our city, and we currently have almost 5,000 people on our housing waiting lists.
“We are continuing to push forward with local solutions against the backdrop of a national cost-of-living and housing crisis.”
