Young Salford singers have a chance to join a free workshop with the National Youth Choir.

The choir’s Sing programme is extending to Salford for the first time, offering a free singing workshop for young people aged 9-14.

The Sing scheme, now in its third year, runs in regions where young people do not regularly gain opportunities in the music industry.

Head of communications Eve Powers said: ”We started the programme in the North East and we’ve now got young people coming through who are auditioning for the National Choir.”

The workshop allows young people to seek advice and support from experienced vocal coaches from the National Youth Choir, with no prior experience or preparation needed.

Around 50 participants have already signed up but more places are available.

The scheme is supported mainly by generous donations and major funders,

The initiative is funded by public donations. Not only are the workshops free but they come with travel support for families who need it.

Eve said: ”We recently ran a Big Give campaign where we applied for £100,000, and we reached that target through donations from the public.

”If travel costs are an issue, we have budget to cover these.”

Other locations the programme will reach are Stockport and Bury later this year.

Regardless of where young people live they are encouraged to attend the sessions and parents are also invited to watch a performance at the end of the workshop to see what their child has learnt.

The event also includes fun activities and exercises such as playing football and frisbee, which encourages kids to be kids and be open to new activities.

Eve said: ”What we’re hoping is that the programmes like this can open people’s minds to new opportunities, not just within music, but saying yes to things.”
