Salford’s owners have insisted the Red Devils will “not close” after the financially-stricken club’s dismal season hit a new low at the weekend.
The Super League’s bottom side, who have been mired in financial difficulties all year and are facing a winding-up petition, were thrashed 80-6 at Hull.
The days preceding the game had seen several key players leave – taking to 13 the number to have departed during the campaign – and a raft of replacements drafted in on emergency one and two-week loans.
And throughout the fixture it was another example of how disappointing this season has been for everyone involved with the club.
It was the latest in a series of humiliating episodes to have played out at the club since the Rugby Football League approved a controversial takeover by businessman Dario Berta in February.
Wages to all players and staff have repeatedly been paid late while the winding-up order served on them by HM Revenue & Customs was adjourned until September.
Communication from the new owners has been limited but, in a rare statement, they have now revealed they are in the process of securing bridge funding “that restores immediate financial stability and lays the foundation for a sustainable future”.
“Our focus remains firmly on long-term solvency and stability.”
It added: “This marks a turning point and underscores the consortium’s long-term commitment to the Red Devils.”
The statement says the club’s financial difficulties were exacerbated by the failure of a pledged external investment of £1.8million to materialise.
The statement said: “We understand the frustration many fans feel. But we want to be clear: Salford Red Devils will not close.
“We have consistently met wage obligations under difficult conditions and continue to tackle over £3million in inherited debt. Your patience and support are deeply appreciated as we work to return SRD to its rightful position in the sport.”
