Stervon house new site for Student Accomondation

Plans have been tabled for 412 new student flats to be built in Salford.

Stervon House, on the corner of Seaford Road, is set to be demolished so that a set of brand new student flats can be built in its place.

If the planning application is approved, 148 new cluster flats comprising 412 new rooms for students will be built in an area of Pendleton that is located only a short walk away from the University of Salford’s main Peel Park Campus.

Seaford Road is home to numerous student accommodation buildings, including Tramways, IQ, and the Waterside Village.

The site is being developed by a company called Team Quest International.

Stervon House was a Leatherworks in the seventies, but has remained untouched in recent years, coated in graffiti.

Work was carried out in January to demolish the building, which was found to contain Chrysotile asbestos – a carcinogenic material that causes mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Specialists were brought in by the developer to demolish the building and clear space for the prospective student flats.

This new student accommodation is the latest development in the area, with the supermarket chain Lidl opening up a store nearby. Burger chain ‘Burger Stop’ also recently opened up a store nearby.

Also in the vicinity, the neighbouring 5.3-acre former British Vita plastics factory site is being redeveloped by Kellen Homes into a 168-home residential scheme named Albion Place.

With nearly  20,000 students currently studying at the University, calls for more student accommodation have been an ongoing plea.

Salford is one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK, and more accommodation will fuel a growing student economy.

With investment into the Salford Crescent region recently being announced, along with the growing development of Media City and the Salford Quays region. The University’s growth also means more accommodation is needed.
