Salford residents are set to benefit from major safety improvements at a key junction on the A6 in Walkden North and Little Hulton, after councillors approved £775,000 of developer funding.

The money, drawn from Section 106 contributions linked to the Logistics North development at the former Cutacre opencast site, will be used to upgrade the Cleggs Lane/Armitage Avenue junction and the nearby stretch of Manchester Road.

Section 106 funding is money which developers are legally obliged to give to the council, used to lessen the impact of new, large-scale developments on local infrastructure and communities.

Deputy City Mayor Councillor Jack Youd said the improvements will “make the area safer for people walking and cycling” and address a junction that sees “a high level of footfall” and several recorded collisions.

Plans include widening pavements at key points, upgrading traffic lights so pedestrians can cross in one go, and adding new cycling facilities such as shared paths and toucan crossings with advanced stop lines.

More than 5,000 people are currently employed at the 250-acre Logistics North site in Bolton and a high volume of traffic passes through the area as people commute to and from work.

The council said the work aims to provide safer, more accessible routes for residents while maintaining traffic flow along a busy bus and cycling corridor. The upgrades are expected to have a lasting impact on safety and mobility in the area.
