A new candidate, Darren Matthews, has been announced to represent Labour for Blackfriars and Trinity ward in council elections taking place on 7 May 2026.

The appointment follows the resignation of previous candidate Roseanna Wain, who stepped down from her role late last year.

Mr Matthews has said “(We hope to) introduce some new initiatives with our local kids to keep them off the street to reduce anti-social behaviour.

“We’ve got a really great youth club, ‘Salford Youth Zone’, I think we need to do more to entice our kids in there and introduce life skills, job skills and introduce them to sports and new hobbies.”

Salford mayor, Paul Dennett has said, “Salford Labour are delighted to welcome Darren Matthews as candidate for Blackfriars and Trinity Ward.

“Darren brings a wealth of local knowledge having lived in the area all his life.”

All parties will have to announce their candidates details, new and old by Friday 10th April. This gives voters around four weeks to decide who they want to vote in at their local polling stations.

Liberal Democrats have said via social media that they wish to offer a community-first alternative, intent on cleaning up Salford including cracking down on fly-tipping and litter, tackling anti-social behaviour and crime with stronger policing to create safer communities, protecting walkways to help river paths, green corridors and public access and instilling accountable, transparent leadership.
