A new heritage trail has been launched across the Crescent area of Salford, inviting people to explore the stories, people and moments that have shaped the city over the past 100 years.

A walking trail will guide people through a series of locations, sharing stories from the area’s industrial past and the communities and landmarks that have shaped it over time.

The trail is designed to be self-guided, allowing people to explore it at any time. Social enterprise group Talk About It Mate will lead guided walking tours on 9 May, from 11am-12pm and on Wednesday 27 May, from 6-7pm, beginning at The Old Fire Station.

Delivered by Untold History and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), The Salford 100 Untold History Centenary Trail has been commissioned by the Crescent Culture Collective and will form part of the wider Salford100 programme.

Libby Rush, Founder of Untold History, said: “Untold History was created to uncover the stories that sit just beneath the surface of a place.

“Crescent has a rich history, and this trail gives people the chance to engage with it in a simple, accessible way – whether that’s through a quick read on their way to work or lectures, out in the park or by joining one of the guided walks.”

Lindsay Taylor, Chair of the Crescent Culture Collective and Director of the University of Salford Art Collection, said: “The intention behind commissioning this trail was to surface the narratives that have shaped Crescent over the past 100 years and to present them through a highly localised lens.

“It offers an opportunity to engage with the area’s history in a way that is immediate, relevant and embedded within the everyday experience of the place.”

Both tours will begin outside Salford Museum and Art Gallery and finish at The Old Fire Station, following key points along the trail.

New walking trail celebrates people and moments that shaped Salford.

The trail forms part of Salford 100, a year-long programme marking 100 years since Salford was granted city status. Through a mix of cultural activity, events and community-led projects, the programme reflects on the city’s past while looking ahead to its future.

The Crescent Culture Collective, a partnership bringing together cultural organisations, institutions and local stakeholders, has commissioned the project to ensure the stories of Crescent are shared in an accessible and engaging way.

Mike Richard, Founder of peer-support group Talk About it Mate, said: “This project is exactly the kind of work we’re about at Talk About It Mate, bringing people together through shared experiences.

The trail gives people a reason to slow down, walk together and talk, while connecting with the stories that have shaped Salford. That’s where the real value is for me, creating those moments where people feel part of something.”
