A Team GB Olympic medallist opened a new Aldi Supermarket in Salford.
Lewis Richardson, Britain’s only boxing medallist at the 2024 Paris 2024 Olympic Games, cut the red ribbon and handed out bags of fresh fruit and vegetables before excited shoppers rushed into the new store in Ordsall on Thursday morning.
The bronze medallist will also deliver an inspirational virtual assembly for pupils at nearby Primrose Hill Primary School as part of the supermarket’s Get Set to Eat Fresh initiative, which educates young people about the benefits of eating healthy food.
He will speak to pupils about the importance of exercise, believing in yourself, and his experience competing as an Olympian in the French capital.
Team GB star Lewis Richardson said: “I’ve had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning. It was an honour to officially open the store and welcome customers inside for the first time.
“I look forward to speaking with the children at Primrose Hill Primary School about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family.
Lewis added: “Hopefully I’ll also manage to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.”
Aldi Salford Quays is also offering pupils at Primrose Hill Primary School the opportunity to win a £20 gift voucher to spend at the new store. The children are tasked with creating a poster to show what healthy eating means to them.
Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner with the new Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.
