Students at a Salford school have created a striking large-scale mural in collaboration with an internationally recognised artist.

A group of students at Broughton-based school Edstart have created a colourful piece of artwork that celebrates the city’s identity and heritage in Salford’s centenary year.

The Salford mural features a range of well-known local references including Salford Lads’ Club, canal scenes reflecting the city’s waterways, Lowry-inspired figures, and the Manchester worker bee symbol.

Students at EdStart schools’ Salford site have created a new large-scale mural in collaboration with internationally recognised artist Evan Barlow, following the success of a similar project at the organisation’s Oldham school.

The project also links with the city’s 2026 centenary celebrations, marking 100 years since Salford was granted city status in 1926, with a year-long programme of events taking place across the city.

Artist Evan said the students pitched a host of ideas about what represents the city.

“The students had so many ideas about what represents their city, and they brought real energy to the whole process. Seeing those ideas come together on the wall has been fantastic.”

James Bradley, Executive Headteacher, hailed the “powerful” the project has been for the “proud Salfordian” students.

He said: “It’s not just about art on a wall, it’s about giving young people ownership, confidence, and pride in where they live. The Salford mural does exactly that and reflects the city beautifully.”

EdStart Schools supports children and young people who have struggled in mainstream education, providing tailored support to help them succeed academically, socially, and personally.
