A health alert has been issued for Salford as the UK braces for a sweltering heatwave.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat health alert for the North West, with temperatures expected to soar over the coming days.

The warning will be in place from 1am on Wednesday 24 May until 11pm on Thursday 25 June.

It comes into force with temperatures in Salford forecast to approach 34C through the middle of the week.

The UK’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is warning of “significant impacts” on health and social care services.

These include a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, increased demand on health and social care services and heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services.

An amber weather warning affecting Salford will come into force this week.

The UKHSA warned that the heatwave may put vulnerable people living independently in community and care settings at risk due to their homes overheating.

The Met Office have advised that people in the alert area drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun, and avoid exercising between 11am and 3pm.

Substantial changes to working and daily routines will likely be required and disruptions to road, air and rail travel should be expected, according to the weather service.

Meanwhile, train operating company Northern Rail has asked that in the hot weather commuters stay hydrated and carry a bottle of water.

They also urged people travelling to use shaded areas of train stations during high heat, wear suncream to protect themselves and asked people feeling unwell to speak to a member of staff rather than boarding their trains.

“Due to the hot weather forecast this week, Monday 22 to Friday 26, some journeys may be affected as higher temperatures can impact the railway network.

“Please check before you travel, allow extra time for your journey where possible, and remember to bring water with you,” the transport provider said.

As temperatures in Salford skyrocket, other parts of the UK may see record-breaking highs of 38C this week.

Forecasters have said there is “growing confidence” this week could break the record for the hottest June temperature of 35.6C, which was set in 1976 in Southampton.
