A 52-year-old man from Salford has been charged with serious assault and driving offences after a hit-and-run collision left one person in hospital with life-changing injuries.
Maurizio Sechi, of Great Clowes Street, Salford, was remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court this morning (Friday 11 September). The charges follow a collision on Broughton Lane in Lower Broughton on Wednesday 9 September.
Greater Manchester Police were called to the scene at around 5.40pm following reports of a violent altercation. Investigators stated that two men had got out of their vehicle to challenge another driver after an initial road traffic collision. The driver of the second vehicle then accelerated away from the scene, striking both men.
One victim, a man in his 50s, sustained severe injuries during the collision. Emergency services transported him to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition with injuries described by police as life-changing.
A second victim, an 18-year-old man, was dragged along by the vehicle as it fled the location. He was also taken to hospital for medical treatment. Officers confirmed that his injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing.
Police arrested Sechi shortly after the incident on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. Following formal questioning by detectives, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised a raft of serious criminal charges.
Sechi faces one count of section 18 assault and two counts of attempted section 18 assault – the most serious form of non-fatal violent crime in England and Wales, defined as causing Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) or wounding with the specific intent to cause serious harm.
He also faces charges of dangerous driving and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has additionally been charged with two counts of possession of cannabis.
Detectives investigating the collision have renewed their appeal for public assistance. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have captured relevant footage to step forward.
Investigators are particularly keen to hear from motorists with dashcam recordings or local residents with CCTV and mobile phone footage covering Broughton Lane around the time of the collision.
