Six tonnes of fly-tipping waste were removed from the streets of Kersal earlier this week as part of a mission to help residents feel proud of their neighbourhoods.

On Wednesday (October 28) cleaning crews ascended onto the streets of Kersal. They cleared litter and dumped rubbish from five alleys, cut back overgrown shrubs and weeds, trimmed hedges and trees and swept up eight streets.

14 staff members of Salford City Council were involved with the day and clearing up fly-tipping was the most prominent job for the team, with six tonnes of rubbish removed.

Residents had the opportunity to get involved, as five skips were put out onto the streets for them to dispose bulky waste.

The skips collected five and a half tonnes of communal rubbish.

Local resident, Julie said: “This has made my day. I appreciate it so much, it’s great to see all this work being done here today. Thank you to everyone involved.”

The clean-up in Kersal was part of the council’s monthly days of action. They are part of the Environmental Services modernisation programme, which aims to help residents take pride in their neighbourhoods.

Previous days of action have taken place on The Height, Eccles and Broughton, with the next one taking place in the Pendleton and Charlestown area in November.

Councillor Barbara Bentham, the Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, environment and Community Safety for Salford says that the communities have said that having clean streets is their “top priority and they want nice places to live.”

She said:  “People should be able to love where they live.”

“We want to give our residents neighbourhoods they can be proud of. We do these days of action on top of the usual day-to-day work, to give an individual area an intensive clean.”

The council are appealing for people to get rid of their waste responsibly by taking it to a household waste recycling centre.

There is no charge for this and you can find your nearest one on the Recycle for Greater Manchester website at Find a recycling centre.
