Greater Manchester Police are setting up patrols around Islamic centres and mosques across Salford and Greater Manchester.
The increase in patrol follows a report of ‘disturbance’ on Sunday 25th September which involved a large group of people at the Islamic Centre on Sidney Street.
One man has since been arrested in regards to the protest at the Islamic Centre and remains in police custody on suspicion of criminal damage.
The GMP officers who attended the protest established that walls of the Islamic Centre building has been vandalised with graffiti along with a vehicle that was parked outside. The graffiti reportedly referenced to the recent protests in Iran following Miss Amini’s death. One man had also sustained a ‘small cut’ to his face.
The protests taking place surround the death of the 22 year old Iranian woman, Masha Amini. Miss Amini died in police custody after being arrested and tortured by the Iranian morality police for wearing her hijab incorrectly. Miss Amini’s death has since caused worldwide protests.
Superintendent of GMP’s City of Manchester district, Ian Jones, said: “We understand the concern these incidents will cause our communities so have increased patrols in locations of significance, both to reassure people and keep them safe.
“Meanwhile, enquiries are ongoing in relation to the disturbances – with officers following a number of lines of enquiry to identify those responsible for these crimes and send a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester.”
