Irlam Train Station has been crowned the champion of the 2026 World Cup of Stations competition.
Irlam railway station has been named the Station of the Year after winning the World Cup of Stations 2026, a national competition celebrating stations that create connections that matter.
The Salford station was one of the 20 finalists shortlisted from more than 150 nominations. But ultimately it was Irlam who came on top, with 4786 votes in total taking them to the title of the champion.
From children discovering local history on school trips to friends meeting in its popular cafe, Irlam has become much more than a place to catch a train.
Councillor of Cadishead and Lower Irlam, Hannah Robinson-Smith, said: “I am so thrilled that our incredible Irlam Station has received this very well-deserved accolade.
“Our Station is a community hub, showcasing the absolute best of us – with incredible food & drink options; local history & heritage; a place to gather with friends & neighbours; and all sorts of activities for everyone.
“Huge congratulations to everyone involved in both the campaign and in the day to day work the whole team do, for members of this community and beyond – and this award gives us all more proof of its status as the BEST station going!”
After standing derelict for nearly 25 years, the station house reopened in 2015 following a £2 million restoration that preserved its Victorian character. Today, the café features carriage booths, while mezzanine rooms host weddings and civil ceremonies.
The industrial heritage of the station is also celebrated through its heritage room, historic artefacts and restored 142-year-old signal box.
the station has a strong sense of community with volunteers, Friends of Irlam Station (FIRST) helping to maintain the gardens, flower displays and much more.
Michael Wheeler, MP for Worsley and Eccles, said: “I’m really pleased to see Irlam station receive this recognition.
“It’s a testament to the many people who put so much time and care into making it such a special place, particularly the volunteers who help keep its history alive and make the station so welcoming.
“I know local people see it as a hub for Irlam and Cadishead, and it’s easy to see why.
Irlam’s victory is a proud moment for the local community and a fitting recognition of the people who help make the station such a special place.
