Neil Wood post Stockport (Salford City youtube)

Salford manager Neil Wood highlighted his ‘frustration’ with the Ammies’ defensive display and the club’s mounting injury woes after his side’s 4-2 defeat to MK Dons.

Wood suggested that his side could have been “a lot better in (defending) all of the goals” noting that “they were really frustrating goals to give away, coming up against a good side with really effective players the last thing you that you need to do is give them help”.

In a fiercely competitive game referee Scott Jackson made a number of controversial decisions impacting both sides.

Wood suggested that inconsistency in the referee’s decision-making impacted his side’s ability to get on the front foot in the game. “Matt Smith’s probably had his shirt pulled off three times and doesn’t get one freekick, really poor decisions that you are not sure what they’re thinking.”

With a seemingly ever-growing injury list, it’s been hard for the club to gain momentum this season.

“If we had a full-strength team I think we could give a good account of ourselves. We have had a tough season with injuries, this week has been tough we have had ten players training for four of the days.”

“That was the only team we could have fielded so whether you’re playing well or bad at the moment you’re playing.”

“We’ve got an inexperienced bench these are tough games to bring them into and throw them in the depend.”

Wood is hopeful that the club can bring in some new faces in January to bolster a depleted squad.

“We need to get better quality, better athleticism, we need to improve.”

Salford have been dealt another blow with midfielder Matty Lund being ruled out of the side’s highly anticipated encounter with Stockport County in the next game.

“We took a few niggles again today and we have got a suspension in Matty Lund for Tuesday so we lose another there.”

Stockport County currently sit top of League Two and Wood is under no false illusions that the opposition will be any easier than the sides Salford have lost to recently.

“It’s going to be another tough game, we tussled it out with them in the playoffs, it was a really tough game against a really tough team and a really tough squad.”

Dave Challinor’s side had won a record-equalling twelve straight League Two matches before losing 2-1 to Newport County.

Salford travel to Edgeley Park hoping to upset the odds against the table toppers this Tuesday. Kick-off is at 7:45 pm.
