Salford City boss Karl Robinson commended his players as the reason behind the club’s first win in all competition in over two months.

Kelly Nmai slotted home the only goal against Crawley Town to secure the Ammies’ first victory since beating Manchester United’s academy in the EFL Trophy on Halloween.

Karl Robinson said following the full-time whistle: “It’s not mine [first win], the players with me, and with the fans who travelled. It means a lot that you’ve come all this way on a January Saturday.

“We played with all the intensity and an appetite to win a game of football, but that’s all we’ve done.”

Speaking on the 19-year-old’s winner in the 81st minute, the new head coach added: “That’s what this football club’s about. We have a strength in depth behind me that can go and impact a game of football.

“The one bonus for me is 22 of them came in the first half. We should have been two or three clear. I think we were comfortable in them moments.”

Robinson took charge of only his second game of his time at the club, with his first ending in a red card just 15 minutes in against Forest Green Rovers.

The ex-MK Dons manager spoke about his expectations for the future, continuing: “I’m sick to death of people saying to me, ‘Where are we gonna end up at the end of the season?’ That’s out of our control. The only thing we can control is who we play next week.

“We’ll realign, we’ll re-assess, we’ll go again. And that is the formula behind what we want to achieve. My staff have to work harder than anyone else’s staff. My players have to work harder than any other player.

“That’s self-discipline, an awareness of what is working hard and what that looks like, and then performing, listening and getting better.”

Salford take on Colchester United on Friday night, with the two clubs sitting in 21st and 22nd respectively.
