Suicide prevention charity introduces new support workshops in Salford

A suicide prevention charity in Salford are starting new creative sessions in June to allow individuals to openly express themselves.

The charity Jak’s World, founded in the honour of late Jakub Halani, have previously hosted several events including support sessions and charity walks, to decrease the stigma surrounding mental health and allow people to freely express themselves.

More recently, the charity is introducing arts and crafts workshops to encourage freedom of expression as well as the relatively new ‘hopeful horizons’ project.

There is set to be eleven arts and craft workshops every Wednesday, starting June 4th to August 14th, at Ordsall Library, M5 3LT.

Attendees can get creative with arts and even writing, to deal with emotional and mental struggles where they can grow connections with others and gain support.

The ‘hopeful horizons’ workshops include holistic healing therapies such as yoga and meditation, to allow attendees to feel relaxed and escape tension.

Jakub’s father and trustee of the charity, Ronak Halani reinforced the importance of different workshops: “we were looking for any opportunity to deliver our services, that would help a variety of people.”

Jakub Halani devastatingly took his own life when he was 19 years old, and Jak’s World was created to continue his legacy and provide support to others who may be struggling.

“Everyday I think of something else or talk to him, I am always reminded of him.

“There is no other way other than to continue doing the good things we are doing, because selfishly I think doing all of these things in his name and his memory it’s helping me as well as others.”

During suicide prevention week in 2024, the charity hosted a variety of events to spread the importance of mental health.

With free hugs and workshops, Jak’s World created a safe space for individuals to gain support and guidance.

This year the charity plan to hold a suicide prevention conference at Salford Lads Club in September to continue striving for their goal of zero suicide.

The charity will again be making an appearance at various pride events this summer to ensure all demographics are being reached and they have a form of support to fall back on to.

“Personally, everything we have achieved is massive, and everyday it reminds me of him.”
