Walkden In Bloom has celebrated £20,000 awarded by National Lottery community fund and Salford Council by wild spreading seed and litter picking.

With 100 new planters around Walkden, the community-led group is moving forward with their next steps to ‘green’ the community.

Paul Whitelegg, co-founder of Walkden In Bloom said: “The majority goes to planters, and sending kits out to the nurseries, to care homes, so they can build the plants.”

Even in pouring rain volunteers gathered in the High Street to clean up before kids could wild spread seeds in the new flower beds.

The group has become part of the Bumble Bee Society, which aims to make the world a place where bumble bees thrive.

To encourage kids to join and help the cause Walkden In Bloom created certificates for the kids who joined in cleaning up the streets and spreading the flower seeds.

Freya Smith, 11, from Walkden, said: “I think it’s really good, like, all the kids can learn from it, and help the community.”

Bex Cartwright, parent of Rowan, 2, and Willow, 3, said: “It’s the next generation, isn’t it? So, it’s trying to encourage like picking up litter and possibly passing on good habits.”

The new flower beds were revitalised by gardening firm Dickinson’s Maintenance free of charge. The business added new guineas, geraniums, hydrangeas, angel wings and lavender amongst others.

Here kids enjoyed throwing around many different wildflower and poppy seeds to add more variety as the flowers bloom.

Dale Dickinson, co-owner of Dickinson’s Maintenance, said: “Flowers are great, they help bees and birds, help pollinate, looks nice and more inviting, kids love it. There’re so many positives to it.”

Paul Whitelegg hopes that people will join and participate more in future projects such as the new allotment they have been granted.

He said: “If you want to come out and get some fresh air, maintain one of the plants. Adopt one. At the end of the day everything you see in Walkden belongs to the community of Walkden.”
