Salford residents are being invited to take part in a unique series of free creative workshops exploring life, work and legacy of Ewan MacColl.
The workshops “Create Your Own Landscape” will begin from tonight (Tuesday 2 September) at the Salford Arts Theatre.
The 12-weekly sessions will run from 6-8pm, and are open for adults of all ages and background.
Inspired by Ewan MacColl’s 1949 play Landscapes with Chimneys and the iconic song Dirty Old Town, it will allow reisdents to explore how the places we live shape our lives, stories, and communities.
Both works vividly capture the changing industrial landscape of Salford, shining a light on the resilience, struggles, and humour of working-class communities living in the shadows of factories and chimneys.
Over the 12 weeks, participants will use drama and writing to reflect on themes of resilience, change, and community, ultimately creating a performance piece to be shared publicly in November.

No prior experience is needed, and the workshops will be open to adults of all ages who are interested in creativity, storytelling, and community connection.
Ahead of the launch of the workshops tonight, Roni Ellis from the Salford Arts Theatre said: “Ewan MacColl gave voice to working-class communities and captured the changing industrial landscapes of Salford and beyond.
“This project gives people today the chance to reflect on their own experiences of place and change — and to create something powerful together.”
The project is delivered in partnership with The Lowry, with support from Salford CVS and The National Lottery Heritage Fund – and will be free for anyone looking to attend.
The first session will begin this evening, Tuesday 2 September, and run from 6-8pm – with residents being able to sign up for the workshops here.
