A wellbeing and community hub in Swinton is hosting a Christmas dinner to help combat loneliness.

The Hive Wellbeing Hub, a community centre based in Swinton, is hosting its annual Christmas dinner days on December 17 and December 18.

The meal will consist of a three-course meal, accompanied by a free glass of Bucks Fizz.

Vanessa Amos, 43, Kitchen Assistant at the Hive Wellbeing Hub, said: “Since we’ve been here, we’ve always done a Christmas dinner.

“We have a lot of people that live in isolation, so it’s a chance for them to meet people, get together, and have a chat.”

With the meal, guests will have the chance to partake in festive activities such as a Christmas quiz and prize bingo.

Vanessa explained how these activities help people socialise with one another and give them something to look forward to alongside their Christmas meal.

Whilst loneliness happens year-round, many people find Christmas an especially lonely time.

According to research by AgeUK, 2.3 million older people wish they had somebody to spend time with at Christmas.

Paola Fish, 26, Communications and Engagement Coordinator at Mind in Salford, explained how Christmas can amplify loneliness as it serves as a reminder that realities surrounding family and support systems do not always live up to expectations.

She said: “For many people, it’s a reminder of relationship breakdowns, or a lack of contact with family.

“People don’t always have that support network around them that I think is heavily advertised at this time of year.”

However, community events such as the Christmas dinner at the Hive can help combat the feelings of loneliness by offering a space for people to connect.

Paola said: “Having a nice, warm, welcoming, supportive environment (offers) an opportunity, even if it’s only temporarily, to feel part of a community and part of a space.

“I think sharing a meal or even just having a friendly conversation can help someone realise they’re not alone.”
