Three accessible outdoor sports facilities are set to be built in Salford thanks to £400,000 of grant funding.
People will be able to participate in free community sports and activity sessions at three PlayZones constructed at Ordsall Park, Patricroft Recreation Ground and St Simon Street.
PlayZones are small-sided, multi-sport outdoor facility will be hard-surfaced and fully enclosed and will replace existing games areas at each site. They are created using investment from the Premier League, The FA and the Government through Sport England.
While football sessions will be the primary focus, these spaces are designed to host basketball, netball, rugby and hockey sessions.
The council hopes that building the sports facilities will increase participation among women and girls, disabled people, ethnically diverse communities and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Contractor Support in Sport (UK) Limited have been awarded £533,890.46 to build three sports centres, which are scheduled to be completed by the end of April.
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.
“Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.
“This grant award to create three new PlayZones in Salford at Ordsall Park, Patricroft Recreation Ground, and St Simon Street is fantastic news for the local community and will help give more people access to a great place to play.”
