Brain tumor

A Salford rugby league club is preparing to host a fundraiser for a 12-year-old girl bravely battling a brain tumour.

People from across Salford are set to flock to Salford City Roosters rugby club in Eccles next month for a family fun day supporting Phoebe-Faith Gyves, who was diagnosed with a rare, highly malignant brain tumour at the age of 10.

Since then, the “kindest, most caring and determined little girl” has undergone chemotherapy, which has resulted in a slight reduction in the size of the tumour.

As a result, she has been cleared to travel abroad, and big-hearted members of the community are working to raise funds for her family to go on holiday together.

With insurance quotes coming as high as £3,000, a fundraising event will be held at Salford City Roosters on Hallsworth Road on 29 August to help supplement the cost.

Organisers are currently on the lookout for singers and bands, children’s entertainers, mascots and activity providers to add to a jam-packed line-up of events.

Rugby matches, inflatables and a performance from a DJ will take place at the fundraiser which will begin at 12pm and run until late in the day.

Kirsty Clempson has helped to arrange the family-fun day and set up a crowdfunder where thousands of pounds’ worth of donations have been pouring in.

“Phoebe-Faith always has a smile on her face despite everything she’s been through and is an inspiration to everyone who knows her,” she explained.

“She was just 10 years old when she was diagnosed with a Diffuse paediatric-type high-grade glioma (HGG), RTK2 subtype, subclass A (novel) brain tumour. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and continues to face every challenge with incredible courage.

Kirsty said that the family has been given a massive boost from the support shown by people across Salford.

“The support from the local community means absolutely everything to Phoebe-Faith and her family,” she said. “It reminds them they’re not facing this journey alone and helps them create precious memories together while taking away some of the financial pressure that comes with ongoing treatment.”
