The early years of one of the biggest bands of the past 25 years are on display in Manchester for the first time in the Oasis Chasing The Sun exhibition.
The ‘Chasing The Sun 1993-97’ exhibition incorporates the first four years of Oasis’ illustrious career. In this time the group released their first three albums, Definitely Maybe, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory and Be Here Now- selling over 45 million albums in the process!
The pieces are being displayed at the Old Granada Studios in Manchester City Centre to the eager public for free. Rare photos of the early “bad lad” touring days of the band as well as early handwritten drafts of classic tracks are on display. A selection of Noel Gallagher’s guitars are amongst the collection as well a large selection of Oasis’ many awards, platinum discs and accolades.
The stand out item of the experience is a life-size copy of the living room on the cover of their smash hit debut, Definitely Maybe. The interactive exhibit allows you to take all the positions of the band that are now ingrained into Britpop culture for a photo opportunity.
Photographer and curator of the exhibition, Lawrence Watson, has worked with the Gallagher brothers for over 10 years and embraced the chance to bring the pieces to Oasis’ native Manchester for the Oasis Chasing The Sun exhibition.
“I’m a photographer by day and I covered the latter part of Oasis’ career. I largely covered the ‘Stop The Clocks’ and ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ era. I’ve also worked with Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds in which I did an exhibition in London” he said.
“A few months passed and we were approaching the, Definitely Maybe, anniversary and they wanted to do an exhibition so then the work began.”
Thousands of people have passed through the rooms in the past week much to the appreciation of its creator: “The reaction has been brilliant and there has been queues around the block since opening day- similar to London really” Watson explained.
Unfortunately, none of the band have attended the show but, Watson, is optimistic for the coming days- “Liam and Bonehead came to the opening one in London so they might be slipping in the back door here soon.”
Oasis Chasing The Sun exhibition is open 12pm till 7pm on weekdays (6pm on Sundays) and runs until October 25th at the Old Granada Studios and entry is free. Organizers urge people to get down soon as to not miss out on this truly unique musical exhibition and experience.
