Uber drivers are today striking over a lack of pay and working conditions.

The popular digital taxi company’s drivers turned off their apps at 1pm today and are encouraging others to do the same.

As well as the strike, organisers The United Private Hire Drivers (UPHD) are hosting rallies outside Uber offices in London, Birmingham, and Nottingham.

The strike has garnered high profile support from Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson.

Speaking on Twitter he said: “Today’s 24-hour strike by Uber drivers is a hugely significant fight for workers’ right across the whole gig economy.

“I would urge Uber customers to lend their support from 1pm today by not using the digital app.”

The Labour Party’s Shadow Chancellor was also vocal on twitter, saying: “I support this strike for better employment rights and urge others to respect the app picket line.”

A spokesperson for Uber said they stand by their pay record, and have rejected any notions that its unfair.

Residents of Salford were quick to side with the Uber drivers, agreeing not to cross the picket line.

One resident said: “Everyone is entitled to fair work and pay, and when people aren’t given that then they are well within their rights to strike, and I wont be crossing the picket line.”
